Yacht Management: When to Outsource the Whole Operation
Crew payroll, ISM compliance, refit oversight, budgeting — why serious owners hand it all to a professional manager.
Above roughly 24 metres, professional yacht management ceases to be a luxury and becomes an operational necessity. Flag-state compliance, MLC crew contracts, ISM audits, and technical oversight are full-time work for full-time specialists.
A good management company delivers three things: a transparent operating budget with monthly variance reporting, a vetted network of yards and suppliers with pre-negotiated rates, and — critically — 24/7 duty cover so a fault at 2am in Bonifacio is someone else's phone call.
Fees typically run 3–5% of the annual operating budget, or a fixed monthly retainer scaled to LOA. On a €500k annual run rate, well-executed management routinely saves multiples of its own cost through supplier discipline and refit tender management.
