Buying Your First Yacht: A Connoisseur's Guide

From surveys to sea trials — the ten decisions that separate a lifelong love affair from an expensive regret.

Owning a yacht is less a transaction than a considered induction into a way of life. Before contracts are exchanged, the informed buyer will spend as much time understanding cruising ambitions as scrutinising hull specifications.

Begin with intended use. A vessel destined for weekend Riviera hops calls for very different accommodations than one bound for transatlantic passages. Draft, range, guest configuration, and crewing model must all follow the itinerary — not the other way round.

Commission an independent survey from a member of the IIMS or SAMS. A quality survey pays for itself several times over in negotiation leverage and, more importantly, in what it prevents you from buying.

Finally, budget for the true cost of ownership: crew, berthing, insurance, refits, and depreciation typically add 10 to 15 percent of the vessel's value annually. Enter with clear eyes, and the reward is one of life's finest pleasures.
